Subsea Cable Monitoring Using Fiber Optic Distributed Acoustic Sensing

Subsea cables are critical global infrastructure, carrying vast amounts of data and communications across continents. However, they are highly vulnerable to damage from external factors such as fishing activity, ship anchors, and environmental conditions, making early detection of threats essential.

To address this challenge, Bandweaver deployed its Horizon Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) solution to provide continuous monitoring along a high-risk subsea cable route. By analysing acoustic signals in real time, the system can detect and classify events such as vessel activity, anchor dragging, and seabed disturbances before they lead to cable damage.

Installed at the control station and connected to existing fiber infrastructure, the system enables operators to carry out ongoing health monitoring, identify emerging risks, and respond proactively to potential threats.

The result is a scalable, low-maintenance monitoring solution that improves visibility, reduces the risk of cable faults, and enhances the resilience of critical subsea communication infrastructure.
