Protection of Warehouse Facilities Using Fiber Optic Linear Heat Detection

Warehouses and distribution centres present a complex fire risk. High-value inventory, large storage volumes, and multi-level racking systems create environments where early detection is critical, yet traditional systems often struggle to perform reliably.

In this project, a steel manufacturing facility required a fire detection solution capable of protecting an extensive 240,000 m² warehouse with high ceilings and densely packed racking. The challenge was to ensure continuous, multi-level coverage while maintaining reliability in a dust-heavy industrial environment where existing beam and aspiration systems were prone to failure and false alarms.

Bandweaver, in partnership with BTS Yangin, deployed a FireLaser fiber optic Linear Heat Detection (LHD) system, installing over 1,800 metres of sensing cable across the racking structure. By running the fiber along every level, the system delivers continuous temperature monitoring throughout the facility, enabling early detection of heat build-up at its source.

Unlike traditional point-based systems, the distributed sensing approach provides precise localisation of thermal events and maintains performance in harsh conditions, unaffected by dust, particles, or electromagnetic interference. The result is a highly reliable, low-maintenance solution that improves detection speed, reduces false alarms, and enhances overall fire protection across the site.
