DualSentry – Distributed Acoustic Sensing

The DualSentry series of Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS) are optimised for Perimeter Intrusion Detection (PIDS) and provides detection and location of intrusion events with minimal nuisance events and false alarms.

The solution is designed to provide complete coverage for high security sites, offering above and below ground detection simultaneously from a single cable. Offered at a highly competitively price point against alternative technologies, Bandweaver is bringing the power of fiber optic sensing technology to a broader market.

The DualSentry controller is specifically designed for security applications across a range of sectors, from residential to commercial, government and military to critical infrastructure. This new variant has been developed for any sized site where pinpoint accuracy is needed to quickly identify and locate a perimeter breach and enable security teams to respond accordingly.

  • Location of events to within 2m
  • Based on single fiber optic sensing cable. No individual sensors, no metal or moving parts
  • Robust and reliable instrumentation with no moving parts (fan free) and utilising high reliability telecom components
  • Ability to react to precise location of event for rapid action and effective troubleshooting
  • Easy to install and low cost of ownership with low ongoing maintenance costs

Bandweaver’s DualSentry solution provides detection both above and below ground from a single unit or even with a single fiber optic cable. This can be applied to covert buried, fence mounted and wall mounted perimeters.

  • Resistance to Cable Cut & Sabotage – Bandweaver’s DualSentry is dual channel, with each channel monitoring up to 10km of cable. When used in a loop configuration, the 2-channel variant will continue to provide uninterrupted detection along the perimeter. This remains true even if the cable is cut or damaged.
  • Minimising Nuisance Alarms – Using AI technology, our market leading detection algorithms are able to develop an acoustic fingerprint of different events, enabling the distinction between genuine security risks and extraneous environmental noise.
  • Location Accuracy – Advanced signal processing technology combined with intelligent algorithms enables fast and accurate identification of the specific location of a potential threat to within ±2m.
  • Lower Cost of Ownership – Overall reduced cost of installation and maintenance when compared with alternative technologies, plus no power needed in the field.
  • Integration – MaxView integrated monitoring platform is capable of seamlessly integrating DualSentry with a wide variety of commonly used 3rd party systems, giving operational teams real-time information from a range of devices via a single interface. In addition, DualSentry has 20 onboard relays for hardware interfacing.
  • Multiple Fence Types – Due to its unique configuration capabilities, DualSentry is suitable for every fence type without compromising location accuracy.
  • Combined fence and buried – DualSentry can operate in fence/wall mounted and buried scenarios using the same channel. This means there is no need to purchase multiple units or run separate cables to cover each application, enabling large cost savings.
Approvals & Testing

Bandweaver is ISO 9001 certified and undergoes a rigorous continuous improvement program and tests all of its products to leading international standards

  • Extensive environmental testing on all products
  • Components to telecom standards > 25 years MTBF
  • Products are designed for low maintenance and cost of ownership (e.g. fan free design..)
Industry Approvals

Bandweaver tests all of its equipment to the highest standards both based on internal specifications and guidelines and also to leading industry 3rd party standards. Bandweaver has extensive internal testing facilities but in addition we also test with internationally leading 3rd party test houses.

The Technology Principle

The Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) measures the temperature along the fiber optic cable using a technique called Coherent Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (COTDR). The distributed acoustic sensor rapidly sends laser pulses into the fiber optic and measures the reflected light from the optical fiber sensing cable. The COTDR system returned scattered signal is mixed with a local oscillator and then filtered. By analyzing the returned light at the Rayleigh frequencies, the distributed acoustic sensing system is able to create a distributed acoustic (or vibration) measurement along the entire length of the fiber, effectively turning the telecoms cable into a continuous series of microphones.

System Integration – The Maxview Advantage

The DualSentry system has an extremely flexible system architecture enabling it to integrate either
with Bandweaver’s Maxview SCADA software or with any 3rd party control systems.
With the loose coupling architecture of Maxview it can integrate multiple systems across multiple
sites with one coherent, customisable, easy to install user friendly interface
